What is involved in the designing of a package?

The purpose of a package design is to entice, educate, wrap and protect an item. The object is frequently for commercial distribution or retail, therefore the designers familiarity of the industry and marketing message are essential. it can also be a more bespoke, craft based solution to the frequent problem of containing an object. The packaging design is often the defining feature between two very similar product offerings at the point of sale of an item and can be the difference between a volume of high and low sales.

The design will usually require the inclusion of information so clarity is essential, as this needs to be easily understood at the point of purchase so that the consumer can make an informed decision.

Apart from considering the faces of of the package, the designer must also consider its engineering. From folds to cutters, to slits, to drawers and locking tabs, the designer must understand how the item will sit on the shelf, how it will be held and how it will be opened and finally kept or retained.
