I have used a few scanners in my life, but till now they have been generally slow, unstable and are always limited to A4.
In the a fish in sea studio we have the Epson 4870 Photo perfection flatbed scanner. As soon as you plug this baby up to your mac its ready to use. As you open up PhotoShop and "acquire image" a preview appears showing the vast amount of settings this scanner offers, giving you the fexibility of al sorts of scans.
With an optical resolution of 4800 x 9600dpi you can reproduce any image to photo quality. It also includes this new DIGITAL ICE Technology, (Ive never noticed it but thats probably a good thing!) which can remove dust and scratches.
So its fast, it scan range is high, its smart!.. what more could you want from a scanner...
Well... one of the most important things for me is that it is A4 but with a 10mm bleed all the way around - in our graphic design studio we are asked to complete a massively wide variety of briefs, which means we have to be flexible in our disciplines, methods and techniques. It also means our tools need to be flexible in use. Basically we need to be able to scan to a4 if required. Most scanners in the market do not account for bleed! Minor point I know ... but definately an important one..
Finally the all important question for any design agency, Does the equipment look good...? This machine looks like it should be part of the apple range. Its rounded edges and shear mass is impressive on first glance but for the everyday user its a comforting feeling having such a don beside you!
