Joan Osborne at Scala
I remember the first time I heard a version of Son of a Preacher Man that totally blew me away. We all know and love the original by good old Dusty, but this new version totally blew me away, something which I thought would never happen after hearing the original!
The version of which I speak was by someone unknown to me at the time, an american lady named Joan Osborne, mostly known for her hit some time ago (if God) Were One of US. Since then I have been getting as much of her music as I can lay my hands on, a total departure of style for me, but an exciting and rewarding journey!
So imagine my surprise when I saw she was playing in London for the first time in years. I took along a friend, who when I said I had bought her a ticket said "Who?"! We went along to Scala in Kings Cross on a cold Wednesday night full of excitement and wholly unsure of what was to come.
Joan didn't disappoint!
She has an amazing voice no matter which of her many styles her talent takes her to, whether it is Soul, Funk, Motown, Blues, Rock or even Country! She hit them all and delivered her amazing vocals with each song that she captivated me with! The highlights of the show, as good as her band were, was with her bluesy numbers, the band giving her a very low and minimal accompaniment that allowed her vocal range, emotion and control to really come over.
I would urge ANYONE who wants something a little different, to feel as if you are in very close proximity to someone who has truly been blessed, to see Joan if and when you can. If you can't, then she has a new album out called Breakfast in Bed.
