Photo realistic image manipulation
The art of image retouching and manipulation is an old art in the world of graphic design. In fact, it could be said that image retouching is to graphic design as swords are to samurai!
The most common misconception is that an image retouching project will produce some draw dropping result for the client. In most instances, the end user will not even know that the image has been altered in any way as most image retouching projects are extremely subtle.
Originally, image retouching would mainly consist of tidying up images after the slides or photos were scanned, removing dust and scratches. As the skills and applications progressed, this widened to actual manipulation of an image, such as, what is most commonly refered to as airbrushing a model's shot from a photo shoot. This could still be something extremely subtly though as removing a mole or managing the model's skin tone.
Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard for image retouching and image manipulation, and it has progressed to such a standard now that the only real limits are the imagination of the client and the designer.
