GO GRAB LIFE

Branding

We were requested to produce an enduring motif, that would represent future charitable projects, in the memory of Nicky Newman, who died of Stage 4 breast cancer on 17 September 2023, at the age of 35. Nicky was a fun loving, honest and outgoing person, who lived her life fully, despite dying at an early age. She inspired and continues to inspire with her actions and legacy. The purpose of this endeavour is both to raise funds and awareness of breast cancer.

The personal nature of this logo allowed us to explore the idea of including a stylised version of Nicky’s signature, and drawing on inspiration from themes that represent her personality – sunflowers, sunshine, and a lightning bolt were all considered as visual hooks to make that connection. And of course, it had to be yellow! This personal approach was key to the aesthetic.

THE CHALLENGE

The challenge was to create a very personal design that has a strong connection with Nicky’s dynamic and vibrant character, it had to represent her vibrant energy, sense of humour, honesty and love of life. It also had to be adaptable and recognisable for upcoming charitable projects, and to work on a variety of media – across digital platforms, in print and on clothing. The design is to provide trust for future activity and aid recognition this is an ‘authentic project’ and that monies raised will go to the cause of legitimate fundraising.

CLIENT REQUIREMENTS

The logo design was to include the words Go Grab Life. It should be circular in form, either as a holding shape (roundel) or with curved lines forming between the text itself. To consider the inclusion of a lightning bolt – a motif Nicky had used during her life, a stylised version of Nicky’s signature, and to maybe include a lobster, to symbolise the concept of grabbing life with both claws.

OUR APPROACH

Our approach began with an in-depth exploration of Nicky’s Instagram page, this gave us an amazing insight into Nicky’s character; honest and fun loving personality that shone a ray of light into other peoples lives, as well as the integrity and honesty she shared – we had to capture that spirit and Joy of Life.

Throughout the iterative design process, we collaborated closely with Nicky’s husband Alex, and their close friend Leanne Pero MBE, including their creative suggestions to refine the creative ideas and to align more closely with their own image of how Nicky’s legacy can be represented.

By combining creativity, strategic thinking, and collaborative teamwork, we developed an identity that reflects Nicky’s amazing virtues. Our approach ensured that the new design was not only visually appealing but also versatile and impactful across all touch points, from digital platforms to printed materials.

THE EXECUTION

The initial idea was for the design to form a stamp of approval, or roundel motif that could be applied on clothing, and on charitable activities that raise funds in Nicky’s name. The personal nature of this logo allowed us to explore the idea of including a stylised version of Nicky’s signature, and drawing on inspiration from themes that represent her personality – so sunflowers, sunshine, lightning were all considered as visual hooks to make that connection. And of course, it had to be yellow! This personal approach was key to the aesthetic.

THE DELIVERABLES

We refined the logo and supporting colour palette to work in print and online – in one colour, and full colour considering future applications on flyers, posters, stickers, T-shirts. Primarily supporting assets fundraising events.
